Canvas Conversations: Kristi Schroeder Larson

Initial K Studio's Founder Kristi Schroeder Larson is rewriting the narrative. This Texas native has transformed classic quilting into a more accessible art, giving people the opportunity to find creative outlets in a world with often far too much screen time. Kristi left her corporate job to start Initial K Studio, delved into the world of quilting, authored a book called Southwest Modern, and hasn’t looked back.

After the birth of her second child, Kristi found relief in the rhythmic nature of needlepoint, which she used as a more portable outlet while being a mom on the move. Her canvas designs stand out with their bold graphics and Southwestern flair.

Be sure to peruse Kristi's designs in my shop here, and you can follow her on Instagram here.

I sat down with Kristi and asked her 20 questions:

Favorite needlepoint project. I’ve loved working on my Flying Geese canvas in Coral. It was one of my first needlepoint designs based on the Flying Geese Quilt Block and I loved how it turned out.

On your needlepoint Wishlist. Anchors & Hearts by Thorn Alexander – I’d stitch two canvases in different colorways and frame each one for my boys rooms (ages 20 months and 3 years old) and Crab Love Needlepoint Canvas by Ramsay Gourd.

Dream stitching spot. Stitching on the front porch overlooking the mountains in New Mexico.

13 or 18 Mesh Canvas. 13 mesh all the way
